Specific List of Foods to Avoid With Gout

Gout suffers are usually aware that meats and seafood cause gout pain. However, sometimes they do not know specifically the foods that should be avoided when gout is present.

This condition of gout is caused by inflammation of the joints due to excessive levels of uric acid in the body that the kidneys were not able to filter out of the blood stream. The obvious question here is, so what causes the uric acid. The main ingredient in foods that causes this is purine. Interestingly, meats and seafood have the highest levels of purine.

To assist the gout sufferer, we are going to provide a list of foods to avoid for pain relief. This list will list the group in order of severity of pain. However, the individual foods will be randomly listed.

Obviously meats will be listed first because these have the highest level of purines.

Organ Meats

Organ Meats: These are such meats as the liver, kidney, and heart, of any animal. These have high concentrations of purines.

Meats

Red Meat: This is generally high in fat, and high in purines. This is typically referring to beef. In all forms, ground beef or steaks and so forth.

Chicken: Chicken is not a major culprit; however, if you have deleted all the other meats and you still are having difficulty, suspect the chicken. It has high enough levels of purine to be on some list to avoid.

Yeast and Alcohol

Yeast: This is a significant offender. The insidious attribute of yeast is that it is found in a lot of foods. The biggest culprit is beer.

Alcohol: This should be avoided in all forms. This would be beer, wine and liquor. It is important that we note that all alcohol has some form of fermentation, and most use yeast.

Dairy

Whole Milk: This is a main offender in the diary section. Many of the other diary products are made from whole milk.

All Cheeses: Most cheeses are made from whole milk, which have high levels of fat content and therefore high levels of purine. Cheeses would be allowed if made from a milk that is low in fat.

Ice Cream: This again is made from whole milk and the high fat content and high purines levels makes this food a food that should be avoided. Here again, if this product is being made from low fat milk, then this would be allowed.

Butter: This is all the fat from the whole milk. This is a main culprit from the dairy section, containing all fat and purine.

Lentils & Beans

Lentils & Beans: This is a group of vegetables that have significant levels of purine to cause pain in gout suffers. These foods should be avoided.

Vegetables

Mushrooms: This is a vegetable that has purine and can cause uric acid build-up. This food is also considered a fungus and can react with yeast and yeast products, which are also a food to avoid, magnifying the affects.

Corn: This is a vegetable that has purine. It should be avoided.

Avoiding the foods that you know are culprits of your pain, makes it an easier choice. The levels of purine are irrelevant when there is pain. Avoiding these foods to avoid gout pain is a wise decision.
